By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Several outdoor activities have been banned in France due to the record-breaking heat wave affecting the continent.
On Thursday, temperatures hit 40C in France with temperatures expected to peak today, the BBC reports.
Experts say that there are more consistent periods of intense heat that last longer as a result of global warming.
In addition, Spain, Italy, and the UK are also experiencing high temperatures.
France officials say that at this time, everyone faces a health risk and warned the public not to expose themselves to the weather.
The heatwave has also raised the risk of wildfires and is the cause of hot air moving from north Africa.
In Catalonia, Spain, forest fires have had to be contained.
Meanwhile in London, a level 3 heat-health alert was issued.
Climate change is causing global temperatures to rise. Greenhouse gases, like carbon dioxide, released into Earth’s atmosphere in large volumes are trapping the sun’s heat, causing the planet to warm, the BBC noted.
