To an awesome Dad

By Nerisi Polonio: Bad news in Belize has become the order of the day. Gunshots have become so commonplace that we hardly even flinch at the sound. Senseless killing is hardly news! In our little country, it’s an accepted misconception that men “ain’t sh**” ….and who can blame us…. our Belizean brothers keep on failing us….and failing their children. But today I write this piece to change the narrative.

I write this piece in honor of a Belizean brother, a son of Peini, Punta Gorda, and My husband, and best friend Roy Polonio. His story is one that must be told as the world celebrates fathers. Because there are fathers and then there are exceptional fathers and that is who my husband is.

Roy almost single-handedly raised his daughter from birth to now 19 years old, while juggling his career as a lecturer, education leader, and farmer of his beloved SARAHALI farm not to mention entrepreneur and producer of the famous PUTITBAK drink.

He often shares in reminiscence, the challenges of raising a little girl on his own. Having to juggle his morning routine to mix bottles and feed his toddler. Having to learn how to comb and braid her hair. Smiling as he recalls the two hairstyles he learned how to put in her hair before sending her off to school or play. Having to learn how to tie bows and pull up tutus.

Having to have “the talk” as she grew into a young woman. The late-night conversations and counsels. The tears of joy at every milestone of her life and the moments when only God’s mercy helped him over the hurdles. All while keeping a house, doing laundry, and being Mr. Mom and Dad. He is always the first to admit that the life of a single father was no easy undertaking but with prayers he did it! He is always the first to admit that he has “nuff respect” for single mothers because he understands the challenge.

But time sure does fly! That little girl is now all grown up….19 years old aspiring marine biologist who recently completed her associate’s degree in natural resource management and now pursuing her bachelor’s degree in Marine Biology. Her mild manner and pleasant personality are a true reflection of the great man who raised her. Her love of science is forged by the nurturing of one of Belize’s best scientists….Roy Polonio.

Yes, great fathers do exist….I know because my husband is the best father to all three of our girls!
