Caye Caulker Village Chair Seleny Villanueva goes independent for third term

By Aaron Humes, Caye Caulker: She had sought the support of area representative Andre Perez, but Caye Caulker village chairperson Seleny Villanueva Pott was persuaded by fellow villagers to stay independent instead.

The two-term village chair believes she has the support of the majority of residents for a third term and will be nominated today in Belize City at Edward P. Yorke High School ahead of elections next week.

But she says she has been able to work with both administrations and has an electorate that, in her words, “votes for people, not parties.”

Villanueva says COVID-19 halted much of the Council’s plans but has been campaigning for an opportunity to continue and finish those plans.

The work that needs to be done in planning the sustainable development of the village over the next five to ten years begins now, she said, including providing more opportunities for residents not only in tourism but also in agriculture and food security, entertainment, and other industries.

And if she is reelected, she hopes to have the support of Central and local government authorities to continue developing La Isla Carinosa.
