Belize Under 18 Men’s team takes third place at the combined U-18 & U-20 Central American Athletics Championships in Nicaragua

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize Under 18 Men’s team captured the third-place trophy at the combined U-18 & U-20 Central American Athletics Championships in Nicaragua on Sunday.

The U-18 Men’s team won 7 medals, 5 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze. Belize’s gold medals are as many as Guatemala’s and Nicaragua’s, but Guatemala took first place as they also won 3 silver and 2 bronze. Nicaragua took second place with 2 silver and 3 bronze.

Glenford Williams won gold in the 200 m and 110m hurdles and a silver in the 100m. Kirk Elrington captured gold in the long and triple jumps. Jahson Logan also got gold in the shot put 5kg, while Rupert Cardinez won bronze in the 110m hurdles.

Belize finished fifth in the Women’s U-20 with Mia Sylvester’s two golds in shot put and discus. We didn’t win any medals in the Women’ s U-18.

And in the Men’s U20, Belize finished sixth with one gold and 1 silver. Joas Mejia captured gold in the long jump and silver in the triple jump.

 

Overall, Belize was fifth with a total of 11 medals, 8 gold, 2 silver, and 1 bronze.

Costa Rica was the overall team winner with 83 medals, 29 gold, 32 silver and 22 bronze. El Salvador claimed second with 16 gold, 6 silver, and 8 bronze for a total of 30.

Guatemala also got 30 medals finishing third with 14 gold, 13 silver, and 3 bronze.

Nicaragua finished fourth with 9 gold, 15 silver, and 13 bronze, for 37 total.

Panama took sixth place with 4 gold, 6 silver, and 14 bronze for a total of 24 medals and Honduras was seventh with 1 gold, six silver, and 7 bronze for a total of 14.

Belize had the smallest contingent at the regional championships with a team made up of only 11 athletes. Costa Rica led all countries with 53 athletes, Nicaragua had 43, Panama 36, El Salvador 22, Guatemala 19, and Honduras 19 as well.

The XXIX U-18 and XXIV U-20 Central American Athletics Championships in Managua started on Friday and concluded on Sunday.
