By BBN Staff: A Belize City man who was caught driving with expired insurance has been additionally charged with trying to bribe a police officer.
Carlos Carcamo appeared unrepresented in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court today, charged with one count of drove motor vehicle without third-party risk insurance, and one count of attempting to corrupt a public officer.
On Saturday, June 18, police at a checkpoint on Ebony Street stopped Carcamo and when asked about his insurance, he told them it was expired. He then offered the officer $40 to not proceed with charges, but the officer informed him that he had committed an offense and would be charged.
In court he pleaded guilty to the traffic offense and was fined $100 plus $5 cost of court. The Magistrate explained to him that the offense also comes with the punishment of a suspended license and asked Carcamo for a reason his license should not be suspended. He said that he has a small child and is the sole breadwinner of his home, but the Magistrate still suspended his license for a year.
The Magistrate also told Carcamo that he could apply to the court within three months to have his license reinstated, but he has to ensure he is not found illegally driving during that time. If he is found in violation of the court order, he will be sent straight to jail.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge of trying to bribe the police officer and was granted bail in the sum of $1,000 plus one surety of the same.
His next court appearance with respect to that matter has been set for August 11, 2022.
