Northern Mexico experiencing historic water shortage

Posted: Monday, June 20, 2022. 2:56 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The taps in the community of Sierra, Ventana in Mexico dried up over a week ago, Reuters report.

Members of the community have now resorted to climbing the top of a municipal water tank to fill their containers for use at home.

Mexico’s federal water commission, CONAGUA says that more than half of the country is experiencing moderate to severe drought.

In Monterrey, the drought has led to citywide water shortages.

Mexican officials say that the country is facing an extreme climate crisis.

In Nuevo Leon, the city began limiting water access to 6 hours a day which caused panic buying of bottled water.

State officials say that they are conserving water by repairing pipe leaks and going after farms and companies that are caught pilfering water from rivers or clandestine wells.
