Police heighten presence around Belize City anticipating retaliation following Benjamin Hyde murder

Posted: Monday, June 20, 2022. 2:40 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Forty-nine-year-old Benjamin Hyde was shot dead on King Street yesterday and now police are increasing patrols around Belize City in the likely event of retaliatory violence.

Hyde, the father of known gang leader Christopher Hyde, was gunned down while riding his bicycle in the area, which is located a short distance from Police Precinct #1, around 3:00 p.m.

Today Assistant Superintendent of Police, Fitzroy Yearwood, head of communications for the office of the commissioner of police, said that police are looking into several angles for a possible motive for the shooting, but that the possibility of it having a connection to gang activity cannot be ignored.

“That is the first angle that we are looking at. We know that his son is in rivalry with the other gang in that area…so we have to give that special attention,” Yearwood said. “We have prepared ourselves for any type of retaliation that might come,” Yearwood said.

He went on to say that, given the unpredictable nature of murders, the department is hoping for the public’s assistance in preventing and investigating them.
