By Benjamin Flowers: Two Benque Viejo police officers narrowly escaped injury today, after their mobile patrol unit caught fire.
Head of communications for the Office of the Commissioner of Police, ASP Fitzroy Yearwood, explained that the officers had just left their station in a red Wingle pickup truck and were driving when the driver heard a loud bang.
He stopped and made checks on the vehicle but saw nothing at first. As they continued driving they noticed fire coming from the glove compartment.
“They said that they then exited the vehicle, in the nick of time because then the vehicle exploded,” Yearwood said.
By the time the Belize National Fire Service (BNFS) arrived to extinguish the flames, two service-issued firearms were destroyed in the vehicle.
Yearwood said that police have a vehicle maintenance officer who is conducting an investigation in tandem with the BNFS to determine the cause of the fire.
