Russians advance, President Zelensky expects escalation as European Union set to welcome Ukraine

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Russian invasion of Ukraine continues just as the European Union (EU)  prepares to welcome the nation’s bid to join.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky predicted that Moscow would escalate attacks as a result.

Ukraine confirmed that Russia had taken over Toshkiyka and was trying to gain grounds to make a breakthrough into the eastern Donbas region.

“Obviously, this week we should expect from Russia an intensification of its hostile activities. We are preparing. We are ready,” Zelensky said.

Leaders of the European Union are scheduled to meet this week to discuss and confirm Ukraine as an official candidate to join the EU.

Ukraine had applied just days after Russian President, Vladimir Putin ordered his troops across the border in February.
