By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Villagers near the Mekong River in Cambodia have caught the world’s biggest freshwater fish ever recorded, Reuters report.
About 12 men had to pull the 661-pound stingray to shore.
Researchers tagged the 13-foot-long female before releasing it back into the river.
Scientists will now be able to monitor her movement and behavior.
Biologist and former host of the “Monster Fish” show on National Geographic, Zeb Hogan said that it is exciting since it is the world’s largest fish.
“It is also exciting news because it means that this stretch of the Mekong is still healthy…. It is a sign of hope that these huge fish still live (here),” Hogan said.
The Mekong river commission noted that the Mekong has the 3rd most diverse fish population in the world.
