By Rubén Morales Iglesias: “CONGRATULATIONS to Councillor Kaya Cattouse, councillor responsible for youth and sports, on being highlighted in Bicycling Magazine this month!” said the Belize City Council in a social media post.
The Bicycling article recounts Kaya’s sports life going all the way back to the days when she shared her time amongst football, triathlon, track and field, and basketball, and her becoming Belize’s first professional woman cyclist when she signed for American-based team LA Sweat.
“This cycling magazine first published in 1961 by Hearst Magazine Company in Philadelphia, USA recently featured Councillor Kaya Cattouse’s debut as the first female Belizean professional cyclist in the 2022 Harlem Skyscraper Cycling Classic which is the oldest bike race in New York City.”
Kaya herself said she dreamt of the day she’d be featured in such a magazine.
“Been reading this cycling magazine for a while…only dreamed of the day that I would be featured in there. Everything is hard before it’s easy…but the mindset to be more and do more is what drives me daily. Born and bred Belizean gyal from humble beginnings, confident that my resilient spirit will triumph,” Kaya wrote on social media.
“There’s no I in team. Each race we have a team plan and my only aspiration is for a team win,” Kaya told Breaking Belize News ahead of Sunday’s crit.
Certainly, a change now that she’s riding for a professional team, as opposed to her solo days when her goal was to win the race herself.
But, as American say ‘you can’t have your cake and eat it’. Going pro means that Kaya has to give up Belize’s most important races like the Women’s Cross Country and the National Cycling Championships.
But as they say, it comes with the territory.
