By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Former President of the Honduran power company, Desarollos Energeticos, Roberto David Castillo was sentenced to 22 years and 6 months after he was found guilty of being a co-collaborator in the 2016 murder of environmental activist, Berta Caceres.
Caceres was a Lenca indigenous woman who led the Council of Popular and Indigenous Organizations of Honduras (COPINH) and was working to stop the power company from building a hydroelectric plant on her community’s ancestral lands.
Caceres was murdered in her home in March 2016.
The council welcomed the sentence and made a call for more investigations into those associated with the company.
In 2019, 7 people including another company executive were found guilty for their roles in Caceres’s murder.
Caceres was a teacher and won the prestigious Goldman Prize in 2015 for her environmental activism. Before she was killed, she had spoken out about the death threats made against her.
