Posted: Tuesday, June 21, 2022. 1:08 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, the United States Embassy in Belize welcomed Dr. Andrew Zonderman, an officer of the Cultural Heritage Center at the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, who is in country to assist in preserving Belize’s cultural heritage.

While in Belize, Dr. Zonderman will conduct site visits and research at archaeological sites across the country. In addition, he will meet with various Belizean stakeholders in government, law enforcement, academia, and civil society.

The information collected from the archaeological research and discussions with local stakeholders will be used to guide the proposed extension of the Cultural Property Agreement that the US has with Belize.

The Cultural Property Agreement supports governments around the world in preventing and disrupting the looting, theft, and trafficking of cultural artifacts.

The U.S. Embassy says that the agreement promotes transparency and accountability, economic development, along with preservation of cultural heritage.

Belize is one of only 25 countries around the world with active Cultural Property Agreements with the United States. Belize signed the agreement with the US in 2018.
