By BBN Staff: A circular sent out by the Financial Secretary, Joseph Waight, on June 21st confirmed that the salaries of public officers will be reinstated in full on July 1st, 2022. As a result the 10% salary reduction that was implemented as part of the cost saving measures in June 2021 and was to have remained in place for three (3) years, is being restored just one year after it was implemented.
In the circular, the Financial Secretary noted that contract officers who were employed before June 1st, 2021 will also have their salaries restored. Those employed after June 1st, 2021 will not qualify for any adjustment in salary, unless it was the renewal of a contract signed prior to this date.
Public officers and others who will benefit from the restoration of salaries will be thankful for this decision by Cabinet especially in light of the significant increase in the cost of living since June of last year. The cost of fuel, butane, transportation, basic food items such as flour and cooking oil, other food items and consumer goods in general have all seen significant increase in prices.
