New Colombian President to focus on resetting relations with the U.S.

Posted: Thursday, June 23, 2022. 1:11 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The newly elected President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro has indicated that he intends to renegotiate Colombia’s trade deals with the U.S.

According to reports by CNN, the election of Petro, a left-wing president, could change the relationship of the U.S. with Colombia.

Petro reportedly plans to discuss 3 main issues, protection for the Amazon rainforest; ending the war on drugs; and moving the Colombian economy away from extractive projects such as fossil fuels.

President Petro and U.S. President Joe Biden are opposed to issues such as relations with Venezuela since Petro recognizes Nicolas Maduro as the Venezuelan President.

However, the leaders may find common grounds for environmental protection.

In relation to the recently held Summit of the Americas, Petro said that he would have attended but would have told President Biden that it was wrong not to include the leaders of Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela.
