United Democratic Party bashes Government for not appointing Justice Michelle Arana as Chief Justice

Posted: Thursday, June 23, 2022. 12:41 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: The United Democratic Party has condemned the Government of Belize’s decision to not officially appoint Acting Chief Justice Michelle Arana to the post.

Leader of the Opposition Moses “Shyne” Barrow, took to social media to express his discontent with the decision, noting that Madame Justice Arana is qualified and capable of filling the post, having been a Supreme Court Justice for the past 14 years. Barrow categorized the decision to appoint a foreign judge, Justice Louise Blenman, to the post as a failure on the part of the government to discharge a duty.

“This decision is a set back for indigenous and equal rights; a set back for every hard working Belizean that no matter how much they toil we have a Prime Minister and Government that thinks you lack talent with no where to go but under the subjugation of a foreign national,” Barrow said. “The Judiciary is no better off with this appointment, however, our National pride and our morale is worse; our fight for equality and evolution has suffered a devastating blow putting us as a Nation in a worse position than we were with the historical advancements of acting Chief Justice Arana,” Shyne said.

GOB made the announcement earlier today that Justice Blenman, a Guyanese national is being sought to be Belize’s first full-service female Chief Justice.
