By Aaron Humes: “As municipal leaders, we must be empowered to introduce innovative financial instruments for resource mobilization to attain sustainable infrastructure; proliferate renewable energy; stimulate local economic development; promote the culture richness of our municipalities; promote sports and healthy living; to improve food security and other things that combine to boost true economic development. We have the vision. We have the partnerships…”
So assured Mayor of Belize City Bernard Wagner during his intervention on the second day of the conference “A Call to Action on Sustainable Urbanization Across the Commonwealth”, as part of a high-level panel discussion focused on “Empowering Cities to Deliver.” The event is an official part of the ongoing Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2022 in Kigali, Rwanda.
The Mayor participated in a panel alongside South Africa’s Thembi Nkadimeg, Deputy Prime Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs; Kenya’s Maimunah Mohd Sharif Executive Director of UN Habitat; and Stephen Twigg, Secretary General of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association and former member of the UK Parliament.
Mayor Wagner had the opportunity to discuss partnerships that the council has developed with different sectors and organizations in order to deliver on our priorities, how the Call to Action and a greater focus on sustainable urbanization could contribute positively to supporting himself and other Mayors in the Commonwealth and what changes would be able to assist him and the Belize City Council in being able to respond more effectively to the needs and development priorities in our community.
The Mayor also participated in the Commonwealth Business Forum.
