By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Sagitun Girlz are facing their neighbours and rivals, the Rumberas, in the Southern Battle in the first leg of National Amateur Women’s League A semifinals in Independence.
The match is slated to kick off at 4:00 pm at the Michael Ashcroft Stadium where they have faced each other twice so far this season.
“It’s come down to this! Two giants enter the stage, only one can make it out! 2 games to decide who makes it to the big dance!” say the Sagitun GIRLZ in their promotion for the semifinal encounters.
During the regular season the Rumberas finished second with 12 points and the Sagitun GIRLZ third with 11.
In their first encounter in Week 2, Rumberas blanked Sagitun GIRLZ 2-0 on goals by Carlene Tillett in the 61’ and Roshanny Narváez in the 89’.
But when they met again in Week 7, on Saturday, May 21, it was a different story as the Sagitun GIRLZ had improved and were no walkover. Jurshia Zuniga hit a surprise goal in the first minute of play for the GIRLZ and it appeared they were going to get away with it. But Rumberas tied the match in injury time on a strike by Shendra Casimiro. 1-1 it finished. It was a very tight match.
Now, they are facing each other today and again next week for the right to reach the NAWL A Finals. It’s surely going to be a head-on confrontation with no holds barred.
