By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Authorities in San Antonio, Texas confirmed that 48 migrants were found dead inside a truck, CNN reports.

On Monday, the truck was found abandoned amidst the sweltering heat in Texas.

The victims are believed to be mostly from Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras.

This latest incident appears to be the deadliest case of human smuggling in recent years.

Officials say that they were notified around 6 pm after a worker in a nearby building heard cries for help.

The worker found the abandoned trailer and saw dead people inside.

Officials told CNN that 48 people died on the scene and 2 died at hospitals.

Sixteen were rescued suffering from heat stroke and exhaustion.

Authorities are still investigating the origin of the truck.
