By BBN Staff: A Belize City man who was fined this week over a drug-related offense, ended up paying more than double that fine when the court realized he had a pending case for a prior curfew violation.
Forty-year-old Kareem Flowers was arraigned on Monday, following a police bust on June 25, where he was found with a metal pipe measuring 2 3/4 inches used for smoking cocaine.
He immediately pleaded guilty to the offense and was fined $200, plus a $5 cost of court; but while in court he was asked about a 2021 charge for violating curfew, which he had not shown up to court for.
He pleaded guilty to that offense as well, telling the court he simply had forgotten about it. He was fined an additional $500 for the curfew violation plus cost of court and was given until August 31 to pay the $205 fine and September 16 to pay the $505.
In the event, he fails to make either of the payments the penalty will be two months in jail.
