Prime Minister John Briceño meets with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky

Posted: Tuesday, June 28, 2022. 2:53 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, has tweeted of the “first but productive contact with [the] Prime Minister of Belize,” John Briceño, earlier today.

The Prime Minister told reporters this afternoon that Belize has agreed to maintain its support for the embattled country at the United Nations and regional platforms. Particularly, Belize will no longer register new Russian vessels under the International Merchant Marine Registry (IMMARBE) and deregister old ones.

Also, Belize will keep an eye out for any Russian money being laundered in Belizean offshore banks, although Briceño says none has so far been found.

The Prime Minister told us that he was unaware of the recent Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ public tweet recognizing 31 years of diplomatic relations, but he maintains that what they have done is illegal and that Belize stands with Ukraine.
