By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The United States Department of Health and Human Services announced on Tuesday that it will be distributing 296,000 doses of the JYNNEOS vaccine for the prevention of monkeypox to those who have been exposed, ABC reports.
Of that amount, 56,000 doses will be available immediately and an additional 240,000 doses will become available in a few weeks.
In addition, officials say they expect 750,000 more doses to become available over the summer.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is also expanding its recommendations on who is eligible for the vaccine due to the difficulty of identifying all contacts in the current outbreak.
The CDC says anyone with confirmed and suspected exposures, including those who have had close physical contact with a person who was diagnosed, contact with a known sex partner who was diagnosed, and men who have sex with men who were in an area with known monkeypox exposure can get the vaccine.
Around the world, there have been 4,769 confirmed cases of monkeypox and in the United States, there are 306 cases.
Officials say that most of the reported cases are among men who identify as gay, bisexual, or men who have sex with men.
However, monkeypox is not considered a sexually transmitted disease.
