By Aaron Humes: Damion Saldano, a third suspect in the murder of Benjamin Hyde Senior on Father’s Day in Belize City, has been confirmed to be back in police custody.
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police, told reporters on Wednesday that they were forced to release him but now have the evidence to hold him: “When we had him, we had not yet obtained the evidence we have now. His 48 hours [were] up and we could not have kept him [any] longer in custody. We now have evidence that can be used to charge him for the crime…”
Saldano joins two men already charged in connection with the murder: 23-year-old Shemaud Nunez and 18-year-old Azzane Domingo, both charged for conspiracy to commit murder.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner bluntly dismissed claims of harassment of Benjamin Hyde’s family over the last few days, who say they haven’t been given a chance to grieve in peace because police have been searching their homes and the surrounding area.
The Commissioner said the problem is the air time given by one particular television station to the family, and as for the threat of potential retaliation, police are ready: “At the end of the day I am not going to beg Christopher Hyde to behave himself. If he wants to be the other way, then for Christ’s sake let him be the other way. We certainly will know what to do with him when the time comes.”
