Orange Walk flood update: Full damage assessment being conducted

By Aaron Humes: The National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) continues its official assessment of damage caused by recent flooding in the Orange Walk District.

CEO in the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management which is responsible for NEMO, Kenrick Williams, said this assessment is being led by the relevant NEMO Damage Assessment Committee, headed by his fellow CEO in the Ministry of Natural Resources.

In the meantime, Williams told us, families affected by the flooding (there were actually separate floods caused by two tropical systems crossing Belize back-to-back) have been supported with supplies from NEMO after an initial assessment.

The floods washed out a culvert near Tower Hill and affected Orange Walk Town and outlying villages as well as Corozal. The Tower Hill area recorded approximately three-quarters of its monthly rainfall total in a single day, Sunday, June 19, when the rains struck for approximately five hours, according to the National Meteorological Service. Both major rivers in the North, the Rio Hondo and New River, flooded, while others in the center and south rose but did not severely overflow.
