‘Belize Police Department is short staffed,’ says Minister of Home Affairs

Posted: Friday, July 1, 2022. 6:53 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: Minister of Home Affairs and New Growth Industries, Kareem Musa, said this week that the Government of Belize is looking forward to the next intake of police officers, as the department is currently understaffed.

Speaking with the media this week, Musa said that the deadline for applications for Police intake #96 was on June 30, and that the department is expected to take on an additional 150 officers.

“Our current police population stands around 2,038 police officers. Back in 2015 or 16 it was near 2,400 officers. So we do have a shortage in terms of manpower,” Musa said.

He noted that over the past year, several police officers were dismissed, while others retired. The department also lost several officers who died either by fatal traffic accident, illness or other causes, leaving the department with positions that need to be filled.

Musa also said that almost 5,000 people applied for the last police intake, which gives the department an opportunity to choose the best and the brightest to join the department’s ranks.
