By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The three Under 23 cyclists selected by the Cycling Federation of Belize are all competing on Friday afternoon at the first ever Caribbean Games in Baie-mahault, Guadeloupe.
The first to hit the road are Derrick Chavarria and Shawn Codd in the Men’s Individual Time Trial Men at 2:00 pm (12:00 noon Belize). According to Orson Butler, president of the Cycling Federation of Belize, ITT will be run on a 25 km course (15.625 miles).
Gabrielle Gabourel will compete in the Women’s Road Race at 3:30 pm (1:30 pm Belize). Gabourel’s race will cover six laps on a 12 km course for a total of 72 km (45 miles).
The second set of events come up Sunday when Gabourel competes in the Women’s 20-km ITT at 9:00 am (7:00 am Belize). Chavarria and Codd then participate in the Men’s Road Race at 10:30 am (8:30 am Belize). The Men’s Road Race covers nine laps on a 12 km course for a total of 108 km (67.5 miles).
The three Belizean riders have been in Guadeloupe since Tuesday. They are accompanied by CFB Vice President Dion Leslie.
The first Caribbean Games, which were inaugurated on Wednesday night, run from June 30 to July 3.
The first Caribbean Games are a multi-sport regional championship event for countries in the Caribbean, including Belize, Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana.
