By Benjamin Flowers: Minister of Health and Wellness (MOHW) Kevin Bernard has confirmed that Belizeans who are not vaccinated are no longer required to do so to leave the country.
Speaking with the media this week, Bernard explained that his Ministry along with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade & Immigration have worked out an internal policy ahead of the full removal of COVID-19 restrictions, which is pending in the coming weeks.
“It has reached a level where it is now your personal responsibility to decide whether you want to be vaccinated or not…” Bernard said. “There is an internal policy decision that has been made between our Ministry and the Ministry of Immigration to allow for unvaccinated people to move across borders on the requirement that upon return they must present a negative [COVID] test.”
He went on to say that the MOHW is preparing a Cabinet paper on the removal of restrictions, which will be tabled once Prime Minister John Briceno returns to the country.
Bernard stressed that there is a global trend of restrictions being relaxed and that emergence of weaker variants of COVID-19 is taking some pressure off health systems.
