By Benjamin Flowers: Officer Commanding Police Eastern Division, Assistant Commissioner of Police Howell Gillett, is making good on his promise to improve the quality of life for officers under his command with his latest collaboration with San Pedro Junior College (SPJC).
Today, Gillett signed an agreement with the Dean and Board of Governors of SPJC to grant five police officers stationed in either San Pedro or Caye Caulker, two-year tuition scholarships. The scholarships will cover half the cost of the officers’ time at SPJC. Signing on behalf of the school was the dean Mr. Gustavo Ellis.
“Ensuring that our officers advance their education will allow for better salaries, sharpen their problem-solving skills, ensure greater job security and promotional opportunities, as well as improve their communication skills and give them a sense of self-empowerment,” Gillett told Breaking Belize News (BBN) this evening.
He added that another agreement is being finalized that will further reduce the cost of education for the officers, so that they only need to cover 20 percent of the cost of their degree.
Back in March, Gillett, signed the one-year agreement with Victor Usher from Central Drug Store, to allow for police officers to get up to 10 percent discount on over-the-counter and prescription medications, stressing that a healthy officer is a more productive officer.
He also pledged to find a solution to police officers having to hitchhike long distances after coming off long shifts.
