R. Kelly is suing Brooklyn prison for “illegally” placing him on suicide watch

Posted: Friday, July 1, 2022. 7:25 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: The UK Daily Mail reports that Robert Sylvester Kelly, 55, known globally as R&B star R. Kelly’s legal battles are far from over, as his attorney has notified of his intention to sue a Brooklyn prison for “illegally” putting him on suicide watch after he was handed a 30-year-prison sentence earlier this week.

Kelly’s lawyer Jennifer Bonjean said that the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) put him under suicide watch for punitive reasons and that the facility has a history of making high-profile inmates suffer the harshness of suicide watch to punish them further. She stressed that the MDC’s decision to punish Kelly by placing him under suicide watch was a violation of his constitutional rights.

‘R. Kelly is not suicidal. He was in fine spirits after his sentencing hearing and ready to fight this appeal,’ Bonjean Tweeted.

On Wednesday, Judge Ann M. Donnelly handed down Kelly’s 30-year sentence in the Brooklyn Federal Court, following his September 2021 conviction for sex trafficking and racketeering.

The court has reportedly not clarified which facility Kelly will serve out his sentence.
