Derrick Chavarria places 9th in Individual Time Trial at Caribbean Games in Guadeloupe

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: National Under 23 Individual Time Trial Cycling Champion Derrick Chavarria placed 9th in the Individual Time Trial at the Caribbean Games in Guadeloupe on Friday.

Chavarria rode the 15.625 miles race clocking 29 minutes, 25.65 seconds (29:25.65). Chavarria averaged a speed of 26.26 miles per hour.

Shawn Codd finished 26th in 33:32.98 at 23.04 mph.

The winner was Yannis Andre Lubin of Guadeloupe who clocked 27:02.22 riding at 28.58 mph. Second place was captured by Guadeloupe’s Raphail Lautone in 27:51.18 and third place by Puerto Rico’s Christopher Morales Fontán in 27:57.54.

In the women’s category, Gabrielle Gabourel finished 13th in the 45-mile Road Race clocking 2 hours, 25 minutes, and 26 seconds at an average speed of 16.76 miles per hour.

The winner was Aylena de las Mercedes Quevedo Álvarez of Cuba who stopped the clock at 2 hours, 12 minutes, and 15 seconds at 18.43 mph. Second place was taken by Cuban Daymelin Pérez Quesada in 2:12:16.01 at the same speed as the champion.

On Sunday, Gabourel will ride the Women’s 12.5-mile ITT at 9:00 am (7:00 am Belize). Chavarria and Codd then compete in the Men’s Road Race at 10:30 am (8:30 am Belize). The Men’s Road Race covers nine laps on a 12 km course for a total of 108 km (67.5 miles).

The first Caribbean Games which started on Thursday, June 30, end on Sunday, July 3.

The first Caribbean Games are a multi-sport regional championship event for countries in the Caribbean, including Belize, Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana.
