By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize Department of Co-operatives, under the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise, is today, Saturday, July 2, celebrating the 100th International Day of Cooperatives on Saturday, July 2, in Orange Walk Town.

To mark the occasion the Belize Department of Co-operatives is holding a one-day Information Day and Mini Expo at Fort Cairns Market Plaza from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. This year’s International Day of Cooperatives is being observed under the theme ‘Cooperatives Build a Better World’.

On hand for the opening will be Orange Walk Mayor Ladrick Sheppard.

The President of the International Co-operative Association and the Director General of the International Labour Organization will make virtual presentations.

Remarks will be delivered by Registrar of Co-operatives Gareth Murillo while Ministry of Agriculture Chief Executive Officer Servulo Baeza will give the main address.

The Maya Naay Cultural Group will perform cultural presentations during the ceremonies.

The cooperative movement in Belize is rather strong and of late the Department of Co-operatives has been registering new cooperatives and is training several groups to become new cooperatives in the near future.

“The aim of #CoopsDay is to increase awareness of cooperatives and promote the movement’s ideas of international solidarity, economic efficiency, equality, and world peace,” said the Department of Co-operatives.

The International Day of Cooperatives is celebrated annually on the first Saturday of July.

“Operating all around the world, in many different sectors of economy, cooperatives have proven themselves more resilient to crises than the average,” said the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs Cooperatives.

“They foster economic participation, fight against environmental degradation and climate change, generate good jobs, contribute to food security, keep financial capital within local communities, build ethical value chains, and, by improving people’s material conditions and security, contribute to positive peace.”

The Department of Co-operatives said that not only is the cooperative movement observing the 100th International Cooperative Day, but they are also celebrating the 28th International Day of Cooperatives recognized by the United Nations. 2022 also marks a decade since the International Year of Cooperatives was launched in 2012.
