By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Tropical Storm Bonnie made landfall on Friday near the Nicaragua- Costa Rica border.

Forecasters are closely monitoring Bonnie as it could strengthen into a hurricane later today or tomorrow.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) noted that as of this morning,  the center of Tropical Storm Bonnie was located about 160 miles (255 km) south of Puerto San Jose, Guatemala.

Heavy rainfall is possible across portions of El Salvador, Guatemala, and southern and southwestern Mexico. This rainfall could cause some instances of flash flooding and mudslides across the region.

NHC notes that while the center of Bonnie is forecast to stay offshore, any northward adjustment in the track forecast could require the issuance of a tropical storm watch.

The public is reminded to remain alert and prepared.
