By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Pomona football field is now the Elroy Alexander Smith Football Field in honour of a son Pomona: Elroy Smith.
The field was named after 49-year old Elroy Alexander Smith at a ceremony on Saturday at the Pomona field. The president of the Football Federation of Belize (FFB) Sergio Chuc was on hand for the occasion.
Elroy has for many years represented Belize with the Belize Men’s National Team (BMNT) playing 61 official games for the national squad. Not only was he a stalwart central defender with the BMNT, for his leadership qualities he was also chosen as the captain of the BMNT for many years as well.
Elroy also played for eight years in Honduras’ top flight professional league, mainly with Deportes Savio but also for Marathon, Vida, and Platense.
Here at home, he has played for many teams like Valley Pride, New Site Erei, and Wagiya before joining Savio in Honduras in 2007. Over the last few years since returning from Honduras in 2015, he joined the ranks of then National Champions Belmopan Bandits from 2015-2017. Then from 2018 to present he has been with present National Champions Verdes.
“Join us in congratulating Elroy Smith, member for life of our Verdes FC, for national recognition of his contribution to football with the renaming of the Pomona Valley football field in his name,” said Verdes FC in a social media post.
“Elroy has played with several elite Belizean football teams, has played abroad in Honduras and has represented our jewel with the Jaguars many times. Congratulations Elroy.”
