Derrick Chavarria finishes 10th in Cycling Road Championships at Caribbean Games in Guadeloupe on Sunday

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Derrick Chavarria placed 10th and Shawn Codd 18th in the Cycling Road Championships at the Caribbean Games in Guadeloupe on Sunday morning.

Chavarria completed the 67.5-mile race in 3 hours, 10 minutes, and 9 seconds (3:10:09), 4:40 behind the winner Christophe Morales Fontán of Puerto Rico who clocked 3:05:29. Morales was third in the Individual Time Trial.

Codd was 18th in 3: 16:16, 10:47 behind.

Morales clocked a speed of 23.66 miles per hour. Chavarria rode the race at an average of 23.08 mph and Codd at 22.36 mph.

Guadeloupe’s Raphael Lautone was second in 3:06:17, 48 seconds behind the winner. Lautone was also the silver winner in the ITT.

Bermuda’s Narraway Nicholas was third in 3:06:19, 50 seconds behind.

National Junior Individual Time Trial Champion Gabrielle Gabourel reportedly did not compete in the Women’s 12.5-mile ITT as planned.

25 riders out of 45 completed the race.

On Friday, Chavarria finished 9th in the Individual Time Trial. Chavarria rode the 15.625 miles in 29 minutes, 25.65 seconds (29:25.65) averaging 26.26 miles per hour.

Shawn Codd finished 26th in 33:32.98 at 23.04 mph.

The winner was Yannis Andre Lubin of Guadeloupe who clocked 27:02.22 riding at 28.58 mph.

In the women’s category, Gabrielle Gabourel finished 13th in the 45-mile Road Race in 2 hours, 25 minutes, and 26 seconds averaging 16.76 miles per hour.

Cuban Aylena Quevedo won gold in 2 hours, 12 minutes, and 15 seconds at 18.43 mph.

The first Caribbean Games were held from Thursday, June 30, to Sunday, July 3.

The first Caribbean Games are a multi-sport regional championship event for countries in the Caribbean, including Belize, Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana.
