By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The United States Embassy in Belize hosted its Independence Day Reception on June 30, 2022, to mark and celebrate the 246th Independence Day of the United States.

U.S. Chargé d’Affaires, Leyla Moses-Ones thanked everyone for joining in the celebrations after 2 years of virtual celebrations due to COVID-19.  Moses- Ones shared a bit on the country’s history and thanked supporting donors who continue to build a strong partnership between Belize and the U.S.

“Today on America’s Independence Day, we celebrate the visionary courage of our nation’s founders, who came together 246 years ago to fight tyranny by devising a new system of democratic governance based on the principles of checks and balances, and backed by the ideals of fundamental freedoms, government accountability, and justice,” Moses- Ones said on marking the momentous occasion.

“ Our shared challenge of the global COVID-19 pandemic brought human ingenuity to the forefront — and accentuated the difference between democracy and authoritarianism: what free societies can effectively create and produce compared with populations who are stifled and instructed by their governments on what they can say, think, and do, and who they can love,” Moses- Ones further added.

Moses- Ones also extended gratitude to health experts in the U.S. and Belize for their shared commitment during the pandemic.

“ As Americans, we are proud of U.S. leadership on the health security front lines, and of our partnership with Belize on global COVID-19 initiatives. I want to especially thank the public health experts in the United States and Belize’s Ministry of Health and Wellness who work tirelessly to keep our communities healthy. I note here with pride that our cooperation has been stellar,” Moses- Ones said.

Last August, the U.S. donated over 228,000 Pfizer vaccines to Belize in its effort to support Belize’s mass vaccination campaign.

Belize also joined the United States in co-hosting the 2nd global COVID-19 summit that resulted in countries around the world committing over $3.2 billion U.S. to address COVID.

In relation to U.S.- Belize bilateral relations, Charge Moses-Ones said ”  We will continue to be ambitious for the bilateral relationship – we will continue reaching for the stars, so to speak. We will continue to cherish freedom and cherish independence.”
