ACES Wildlife: A dead croc found in San Pedro had been poached

Posted: Tuesday, July 5, 2022. 3:12 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: ACES Wildlife Rescue says that last week they were notified of a decomposing crocodile on the shores of Laguna Del San Pedro in Ambergris Caye.

ACES noted that the crocodile had been poached. It was killed with repeated blows to the neck almost severing the head completely and had stab wounds around the body.

ACES says that after several crocs were poached in 2019, there had been no new reported cases of crocodile poaching.

“Love them or hate them, crocodiles are a keystone species vital to the balance of a healthy ecosystem, and are a protected species here in Belize,” the wildlife rescue organization stated.

The public is encouraged to report wildlife crimes to the Belize Forest Department.
