By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) monkeypox outbreak global map, The Bahamas is the 1st country in the Caribbean to confirm a case of monkeypox.

Officials say that a visitor to the island tested positive for the virus. The visitor reportedly traveled from London on June 9 and was quarantined when he began displaying symptoms of the disease.

The patient was reportedly evacuated to Florida and his suspected contacts were tested and are being monitored.

Data as of July 1st, 2022 shows that there have been 5,783 cases of monkeypox around the world.

The World Health Organization (WHO) says that health officials in all countries should be on the alert for signals related to people presenting with a rash that may be associated with fever, enlarged lymph nodes, back pain, and muscle aches.
