By Rubén Morales Iglesias: After internal problems landed the Premier League of Belize in court and caused its shutdown, the Football Federation of Belize (FFB) instituted the FFB Top League last season to keep top flight football playing according to Concacaf and FIFA requirements.
The PLB resolved its differences and is now resuming its championship this month.
PLB manager Wilhelm Miguel said that though the PLB comprises nine teams, at least five others have applied for inclusion in the upcoming season.
The PLB said in June, after its 7th Ordinary Congress, that its nine clubs would play a double round robin with playoffs afterward to determine the champion. That champion will represent Belize in the 2023 Central American Championship which qualifies six teams for the new and expanded Concacaf Champions League which Concacaf announced on June 1.
The PLB’s member clubs are Bandits Sports, Placencia Assassins, Verdes FC, San Pedro Pirates, Altitude FC, Wagiya FC, Freedom Fighters, Police FC, and Belize Defence Force FC.
The PLB has not disclosed the names of the new clubs that applied for membership.
The clubs, like Verdes, Altitude, Bandits, and Wagiya, have been actively preparing for the upcoming season. National champs Verdes, who are also preparing for their participation in the Central American Club Championship, are playing their first friendly match against CSD Melchor from Guatemalan neighbouring town Melchor de Mencos at the Edmund Marshalleck Stadium at 7:00 pm on Thursday.
