Posted: Tuesday, July 5, 2022. 9:07 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Bahamas has confirmed the first case of monkeypox.

According to Loop News, a visitor to the island tested positive for the virus.

The visitor reportedly traveled from London on June 9 and was quarantined when he began displaying symptoms of the disease.

The patient was reportedly evacuated to Florida and his suspected contacts were tested and are being monitored.

The World Health Organization (WHO) notes that as of 22 June, there have been 3,413 laboratory-confirmed cases and one death.

Monkeypox has been confirmed in 50 countries/territories.

Officials say that most of the reported cases are among men who identify as gay, bisexual, or men who have sex with men.

However, monkeypox is not considered a sexually transmitted disease.

Scientists say that anyone regardless of sexual orientation is at risk of catching monkeypox if they are in close, physical contact with an infected person.

Symptoms of monkeypox include rash, fever, swollen lymph nodes, muscle, and joint aches, and fatigue.
