By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Tuesday, Tropical Storm Bonnie strengthened to a major category 3 hurricane, the first major hurricane of the eastern Pacific season.
Officials have confirmed that 5 people lost their lives as Tropical Storm Bonnie swept through Central America last week.
Heavy rainfall caused flooding in El Salvador and Nicaragua.
As of this morning, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) noted that Bonnie weakened to a category 2 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 100 miles per hour.
Swells generated by Bonnie will continue to affect portions of the coast of southwestern Mexico during the next day or so.
Forecasters warn that these swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.
