Homeland Security Secretary warns migrants against dangerous border journey after smuggling incident leaves 53 dead

Posted: Wednesday, July 6, 2022. 9:45 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Sunday, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas warned migrants not to take the dangerous journey to cross the U.S.- Mexico border, CNN reports.

Last week, 53 migrants died in the sweltering heat in an abandoned trailer truck in San Antonio, Texas in what is being called the deadliest human smuggling incident in U.S. history.

“We have said repeatedly, and we continue to warn people not to take the dangerous journey. We saw so tragically in San Antonio, Texas, one of the possible tragic results of that dangerous journey, and so many people don’t even make it that far in the hands of exploitative smugglers,” Mayorkas said in an interview.

Mayorkas said that investigation is still ongoing into the tragedy in San Antonio.

President Joe Biden has committed that his administration will continue to do everything possible to stop human smugglers and traffickers from taking advantage of people who are seeking to enter the United States between ports of entry.
