Police hold driver in fatal crash on Philip Goldson Highway

By Aaron Humes: One man is dead and another is being held by police following a fatal traffic mishap on Tuesday night in Orange Walk.

About a mile out of San Jose village, Orange Walk on the Philip Goldson Highway, police found a white Toyota Tacoma pickup truck, and a few feet away, a man inside a yard lying motionless. He was identified as Eden Itzab, who died after being thrown from the vehicle into a coconut tree.

According to passenger Rigoberto Lopez, he, Itzab, and Herman Gutierrez, the driver, were headed north to Corozal Town when Gutierrez allegedly lost control of the vehicle near Mile 62 and struck a culvert. While Itzab was in the pan of the pickup, Lopez was seated inside and avoided significant injury.

Gutierrez is alleged to have fled the scene but been later apprehended. Police investigations continue.
