Robert Crimo charged with 7 counts of murder, faces mandatory life sentence

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: U.S. officials say that the suspect that reportedly opened fire during a 4^th of July parade in Highland Park, Illinois has been charged with 7 counts of murder.

Seven people lost their lives and over 30 more were injured during the shooting, BBC reports.

Officials say that more charges will be filed before the investigation is complete.

Lake County State Attorney Eric Rinehart said during a news conference that if convicted, the 7 murder counts alone would carry a mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole for Robert Crimo.

Crimo is accused of firing 70 bullets from a high-powered rifle down onto the crowd. He later disguised himself as a woman and escaped the scene.

When he was found, authorities say he had a second rifle similar to the one used in the attack. At his home, authorities found 3 more firearms.

In addition, authorities said that in 2019, police were called to Crimo’s home twice, first in April after he tried to commit suicide and then in September when he threatened to “kill everyone”.
