54-year-old Belize City man found guilty of raping three-year-old boy

By BBN Staff: Today, a 54-year-old man was found guilty in the Supreme Court for raping a three-year-old boy.

The Belize City resident, Alfonso Perez, appeared unrepresented in court today to learn his fate, in the trial without a jury, before Justice Ricardo Sandcroft.

The incident dates back to the night of June 30, 2019, when the victim’s nine-year-old sister, says she found her baby brother on a roof performing oral sex on Perez. The sister, who is now 12, testified to those events in court and also said that Perez tried to stop her from telling anyone, but she escaped and immediately told her family.

Justice Sandcroft, in his judgment said that he believed the witnesses to be a credible and intelligible girl, and accepted her testimony.

In his defense, Perez gave an unsworn statement from the dock, which is not subject to cross examination by the Crown. In his statement he claimed that he was on the roof, cooling off because it was a hot night, and stayed up there only in his boxers. He further claimed that three children (the three year old victim, the nine year-old sister, and another sibling, also a small child) came and attacked him on the roof, demanding money.

He said he never had any contact with any of them, but rather just went to bed and was arrested by police the next day. Perez maintained that he would never commit such an act, as he has three sons of his own.

Upon careful consideration of all the facts, Justice Sandcroft was satisfied that the offense had been proven beyond a reasonable doubt. Perez’s sentencing date has been set for July 29, at which time the court will hear mitigation pleas on his behalf.

A psychiatric evaluation was also ordered for Perez before the sentencing hearing.
