Coalition of Churches thanks nation for supporting marijuana referendum

Posted: Thursday, July 7, 2022. 2:28 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Following the announcement from Chief Elections Officer Josephine Tamai earlier this week that the required 10 percent of the electorate had successfully signed on to trigger a referendum on the legalization of marijuana, the churches have offered their thanks to the nation.

Noting that a formal announcement from the Office of the Governor-General on the issuance of a Writ of Referendum has yet to be made, the Coalition states that it believes that “to remain true to our democratic ideals, we must allow the voices of our citizens to be heard through the undertaking of a significant national conversation on this topic. This upcoming Referendum gives our citizens the right to decide on this dangerous and radical shift to the soul of our nation, which will forever alter our virtues, peace, sobriety, economic stability and security.”

At this hour a press briefing is taking place and we will have further details later on.
