By BBN Staff: A Belize City man is alleging police brutality after police caught him trying to escape custody.
Twenty-one-year-old Jason Moss, appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court this week, charged with one count of keeping unlicensed ammunition with respect to five live rounds of .9mm ammunition allegedly found in his pants pocket during a police search and one count of escaping lawful custody.
He pleaded not guilty to both charges and told the court that police never actually found the bullets on him. He further alleged that police beat him up once they apprehended him. He showed the court injuries to his mouth and other parts of his body, which he claimed were sustained during his detention. He also accused police of trying to drown him while he was in their custody.
The magistrate made note of his accusations and then explained to him that, given the nature of his offenses, he could not be granted bail at the magistrate level. He was then remanded into custody at the Belize Central Prison until August 22, 2022.
