By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Almost 7,000 cases of monkeypox have been confirmed around the world.
There are 560 cases in the United States and 27 in Mexico, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) map.
During an interview with 7News Belize this week, Minister of Health and Wellness, Kevin Bernard said that surveillance has already begun in Belize, and health officers will be prepared for any cases of monkeypox.
“Surveillance has already been put in place so that we can, at some point, be prepared and ready that should in case we do have that issue here in Belize, we are going to be prepared. But, I must tell you that, thankfully, we don’t have any such issue here in Belize as yet. But, we never know when these things can hit our area. So, we must be very much prepared for that, and our team is ready,” Bernard stated.
In addition, Bernard noted that the epidemiology unit is also being cautious, especially at border entry points.
