Woman accused of arson by her common-law-husband claims the house that burned was hers

Posted: Thursday, July 7, 2022. 9:54 am CST.

By BBN Staff: A Belize City woman who was charged for burning a house down, claims that the house in question was actually hers.

Fifty-year-old Clarine Castillo appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court this week, on a single count of arson.

In court, she told Senior Magistrate Aretha Ford that she never burned the house down, as it had cost her $150,000. She further alleged that the man who made the complaint, her common law husband Devon Jeban, beat her up badly. She said that the encounter had left her face swollen and that she was in considerable pain during her court appearance. She went on to explain that she had gone to make a report about being beaten up when police detained her.

But the Senior Magistrate explained that, since the matter is indictable and will be tried in the Supreme Court, Castillo did not need to offer her explanation at that time.

The prosecution did not object to bail, so it was granted to her in the sum of $5,000 plus two sureties of $2,500 each, which she was able to meet.

The house, located in the Cet site area of the city was burned down on Saturday, June 2.
