Teen sentenced to two months in jail for obsolete mask violation

By BBN Staff: Yes, even in July 2022, mask-wearing violations are still a thing, and people are still being fined and going to jail because of them. That’s what happened to 18-year-old Robert Arnold this week.

Jones appeared, unrepresented, in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, charged with failing to wear a face mask or other face and mouth covering whilst in public.

He pleaded guilty to the charge with an explanation, telling the court that at the time police found him, he had taken his face mask down to drink some water.

The court decided that he would be sentenced to two months in prison for his guilty plea since he was already serving a six-month prison sentence for a charge of handling stolen goods, for which the sentence was handed down back in March.

Though the Government of Belize put an end to mask mandates on March 1, those who were charged for COVID-19 prevention regulation violations, are still trickling into the court system to be sanctioned.
