By Rubén Morales Iglesias: “UNICEF Belize expresses its condolences to the People and Government of Japan on the tragic loss of the Former Prime Minister of Japan, His Excellency Rt. Hon. Shinzo Abe, on Friday July 8, 2022,” said UNICEF Belize in a social media post on Friday.

Abe was assassinated earlier on Friday while delivering a campaign speech in the Japanese city of Nara.

“The Government of Japan has and continues to be a significant humanitarian ally to UNICEF’s work in the region to protect children and their families,” said UNICEF Belize.

“Our thoughts are with the members of the Japanese International Cooperation Agency, the Embassy of Japan in Belize and Japanese nationals across Belize and in Japan during this most difficult time.”

Japanese police immediately apprehended the shooter.

Abe was Japan’s longest serving Prime Minister.
